Product info about Epu 2021
Epu 2021 is the second wine of Almaviva, made in Puente Alto in Chile's Maipo Valley. The name Epu means two in the Mapuche language, a clear reference to its position within the estate. For the 2021 vintage, the blend is led by cabernet sauvignon at 80%, supported by 15% carménère and 5% merlot.Its appeal lies in the close relationship with Almaviva itself. Epu comes from the same vineyard environment, mainly from younger vines, giving it a more approachable expression while keeping the cabernet-driven identity of Puente Alto. Twelve months in French barriques, with only a modest proportion of new oak, help frame the ripe fruit and savoury spice without pushing the wine into a heavier style.
The 2021 growing season brought its own nuance. After winter rain and unexpected rainfall in late January, cooler conditions from January through to harvest encouraged gradual ripening. The producer links this to freshness, tension and balance in the grapes and wines. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Chilean red we like to explain in context: refined, structured and clearly shaped by place.
The strong critical reception for this vintage reflects that profile, with praise for its ripe fruit, polished tannins and more accessible character compared with some earlier releases. As these are the last bottles, Epu 2021 is also becoming a less common find.
