Product info about Chateau Rieussec 2021
Château Rieussec 2021 comes from one of Bordeaux's classic sweet wine landscapes: Sauternes. The estate sits on the border of Fargues and Sauternes, where the influence of the Ciron and Garonne helps the development of noble rot. That patient, selective work in the vineyard is central to the style, bringing natural sweetness, concentration and aromatic depth.The 2021 vintage was anything but straightforward. Frost, rain and unsettled weather kept yields low, before September mist and rain encouraged a gradual spread of botrytis. Harvesting was done by hand in several selective passes, up to four in total. The final blend is 94% Sémillon and 6% Sauvignon blanc, with parcels pressed and vinified separately, followed by around 18 months of ageing in barrel.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Sauternes we like to explain slowly rather than reduce to a label. It is the grand vin of Château Rieussec, a Premier Cru Classé from the 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac, and the estate is part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite. From the 2021 vintage onward, Rieussec also introduced a redesigned bottle with a resealable closure, intended to let the wine keep well for several weeks in the fridge after opening.
Serve it chilled. Rieussec mentions pairings such as oysters at brunch and sweetbread, while broader suggestions include white meat, spicy dishes, savoury bites and desserts. With only the last bottles remaining, this is a fine opportunity to experience a serious Sauternes from a demanding, carefully selected vintage.
