Product info about Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl

Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is a Japanese single malt with a very clearly defined identity: distilled in 2018, bottled in 2023 and drawn from one individual Bourbon Cask. Rather than presenting a broad house style, it captures one specific cask after five years of maturation.

Only 325 bottles were filled, and the product is marked as being down to the last bottles. At Drankenshop Broekmans, releases like this are valued for that precise sense of origin: a limited Japanese single cask whisky with a clear cask reference and a compact maturation story.

At 55.6% alcohol, it comes across as a powerful bottling on paper. The supplied flavour profile points mainly toward fruit and spice, with the wood influence present but not dominant. The emphasis is therefore on a fruit-spice driven single malt shaped by its Bourbon Cask, rather than on peat, salt or floral notes.

The supplied flavour profile places fruit and spice at the centre of the whisky's character. Wood is present, though more as a supporting element than as the main feature.

As no detailed tasting notes are provided, the description stays with the confirmed profile: a powerful Japanese single malt built around fruity and spiced dimensions, with a lighter contribution from its Bourbon Cask maturation.

About SHIZUOKA

The first stone of Shizuoka distillery was laid in 2016, and the distillery began distilling in 2018. They bought the machinery from the Karuizawa distillery, which closed in 2001, but only 1 still and the malt mill were still usable. Shizuoka Distillery has 8 washbacks, 4 of oregon pine and 4 of Japanese cedar wood. The fermentation time is 5 days (!). They have 3 pot stills, of which 2 are wash stills and 1 is a Forsyth spirit still. The main difference at Shizuoka occurs during the first distillation: one of the wash stills is the one from Karuizawa (K-still), the other is a still that is heated by a direct wood fire (W-still). With this, they are the only single malt distillery in the world working with this system. These whiskies are distilled and aged separately. They are finally bottled as Pot Still K, Pot Still W, or United (a self-blend of about 50% K-still and about 50% W-still).

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl?

Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a single cask whisky?

Yes, Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a whisky at cask strength?

No, Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl een goede keuze voor mij?

This Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a spicy whisky?

Yes, Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a fruity whisky?

Yes, Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl an independent bottling?

No, Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is an official bottling of Shizuoka.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Japan it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl whisky from Shizuoka is not an organic product.

Can I buy Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl without deploying loyalty tokens?

Shizuoka 2018 5y W 50cl is one whisky which is part of our loyalty programme. That means you have to use loyalty tokens to buy this bottle. Without the necessary loyalty tokens, you cannot order this bottle from us, not even at an additional price or by contacting us by e-mail. On principle, we do not make any exceptions to our programme.

In the past, loyal Broekmans customers were often left out in the cold because bottles like this one were immediately bought up by bottle flippers. True fans and lovers of our products were therefore condemned to the much more expensive second-hand market. With this loyalty programme, every customer who consistently chooses Broekmans has the opportunity to build up a token balance, and with those accumulated credits they can then grant themselves access to unique and rare bottlings like this one.

Thus, as an whiskyenthusiast who consistently chooses Broekmans has more than an edge over anyone who is only concerned with capitalising on it rather than from a deep-seated passion.

How do I get started with Japanese whisky?

In 1918, a young Japanese chemistry student Masataka Taketsuru left for Scotland with one clear goal: to learn how to make whisky. He studied in Glasgow, interned at several distilleries and obsessively noted down every detail of the process. Those notes would later form the basis of the Japanese whisky industry.

Today, Japanese whisky is a phenomenon. Bottles go under the hammer for tens of thousands of euros, distilleries can barely keep up with demand and the number of producers has exploded. But at the same time, that also makes it confusing: where do you start if you just want to drink it?

You'll discover all about it in our blog post Japanese whisky explained: from entry-level to untraceable.
