Our buying advice for Tamdhu Distinction IV

The Tamdhu Distinction IV is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who appreciate the finer single malt whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Speyside and was bottled at 48%. Especially suitable for those seeking approachability: this softly spiced whisky helps you further develop your palate. Perfect as a midweek dram, as a starter, or as a safe choice for a gift. Seasoned enthusiasts may prefer something a bit more complex, but much depends on mood and personal preference. The price of this single malt whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality more than justify it.

Flavour notes

The aroma starts with warm malt, vanilla and spiced oak, before orange and mint add a brighter lift.

On the palate the oak feels softer, joined by plums and dark chocolate in a rich, luxurious mouthfeel. The finish is very long, carried by sherry-seasoned oak before giving way to figs and golden syrup.

Product info about Tamdhu Distinction Iv

Tamdhu Distinction IV is built around a relationship that sits at the heart of Tamdhu's identity: Speyside single malt and sherry cask maturation. This limited edition focuses that idea through first-fill American oak casks seasoned with Oloroso sherry.

The wood has its own journey here. North American oak travelled to Jerez in Spain, where it was made into casks and shaped by Oloroso before Tamdhu's spirit entered the story. That background gives the whisky its emphasis on rich fruit, warm sweetness and sherry-seasoned oak without turning it into a purely technical exercise.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Tamdhu for drinkers who want the distillery's classic sherry-matured side in a more defined limited release. Bottled at 48%, it has the strength to carry the generous mouthfeel and deeper flavours described in the glass.

About TAMDHU

Nestled in the Speyside region, the heart of Scottish whisky production, the Tamdhu distillery stands out for its unwavering dedication to sherry. Since its founding in 1897, Tamdhu has built its reputation around a unique principle: every drop of its single malt is matured exclusively in first-class Spanish oak sherry casks. Unlike many other distilleries that use a mix of casks (bourbon, sherry, etc.), Tamdhu fully commits to the richness and complexity of Oloroso sherry casks. This approach gives its whiskies a generous character, with pronounced notes of dried fruit (raisin, apricot), gentle spices, and honey. The distillery, whose name means the little black hill in Scottish Gaelic, still works with its original larchwood washbacks and uses pure water from the Ailie Brae spring. Today, Tamdhu is praised by connoisseurs for expressions such as the "Tamdhu 12 Year Old," a whisky with an intense and fruity profile that perfectly embodies the deep and warm identity of the distillery.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tamdhu Distinction IV?

Tamdhu Distinction IV is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Tamdhu Distinction IV is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a single cask whisky?

No, Tamdhu Distinction IV is not a single cask whisky.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a whisky at cask strength?

No, Tamdhu Distinction IV is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tamdhu Distinction IV is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tamdhu Distinction IV might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a popular whisky?

Absolutely! Tamdhu Distinction IV is a whisky currently featured in our Top Trending. This top includes the 100 products that recorded the biggest increase in sales in our shops over the past 30 days compared to the 30 days before.

These can be new products, products that have been out of stock for a longer period of time, products that only appear once a year or products that have suddenly skyrocketed in popularity (e.g. due to a sudden hype, trend, positive reviews, etc.).

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Tamdhu Distinction IV whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Tamdhu Distinction IV is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Tamdhu Distinction IV a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Tamdhu Distinction IV is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Tamdhu Distinction IV pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tamdhu Distinction IV whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tamdhu Distinction IV have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Tamdhu Distinction IV is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV an independent bottling?

No, Tamdhu Distinction IV is an official bottling of Tamdhu.

Is Tamdhu Distinction IV suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tamdhu Distinction IV is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
