Product info about Tomintoul 2010 10y

Tomintoul 2010 10y is a Speyside single malt with a very clearly defined identity: one cask, one vintage and a small outturn of 246 bottles. Distilled in 2010 and bottled in March 2021 after 10 years of maturation in a butt, it is less about a broad house release and more about one specific cask chosen at a particular point in time.

It was bottled by the Campbeltown Whisky Company under the Watt Whisky label and presented at cask strength, 56.7% ABV. That gives the whisky a direct, concentrated format, especially appealing for drinkers who enjoy independent bottlings and want to explore Tomintoul through a single-cask lens.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this kind of bottling sits in the part of the range for customers who look beyond regular distillery expressions. With its limited bottle count, cask strength presentation and remaining last bottles, this Tomintoul has the quiet appeal of a release that will not simply be replaced by the next standard batch.

No detailed tasting notes are provided for this release, so the clearest guide to the tasting experience is its format: a 56.7% cask strength single malt that deserves an unhurried approach.

The single cask origin is central here. Rather than presenting a broad, standardised Tomintoul profile, it captures one individual Speyside cask after 10 years of maturation.

About TOMINTOUL

Tomintoul is a fairly recent distillery, built in 1965 in the Speyside. During that period, as many as 5 new distilleries were built in Scotland in a very short time. Tomintoul merged with Fettercairn a few years later, and was for a long time an important part of the blends produced by owners Whyte & MacKay. Until in 2000 the current owners Angus Dundee Distillers took over. Fun fact: the largest whisky bottle in the world is located in the village of Tomintoul in the local restaurant and is, of course, a Tomintoul 14yo. There is no less than 105 liters of whisky in the bottle!

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tomintoul 2010 10y?

Tomintoul 2010 10y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Tomintoul 2010 10y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Tomintoul 2010 10y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Tomintoul 2010 10y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tomintoul 2010 10y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tomintoul 2010 10y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Do you drink Tomintoul 2010 10y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tomintoul 2010 10y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tomintoul 2010 10y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y an independent bottling?

Tomintoul 2010 10y is a whisky of the Tomintoul brand bottled by the independent bottler Campbeltown Whisky Company. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tomintoul 2010 10y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Tomintoul 2010 10y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Tomintoul 2010 10y whisky from Tomintoul is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
