Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 in magnum is a bottle with a strong sense of origin, vintage and patience. This is a dry red DOCG wine from Montalcino in Tuscany, made from Sangiovese, traditionally known in the area as Brunello. At Poggio Antico, the Riserva is not produced as a fixed single-vineyard bottling every year; it is made only when selected parcels show the concentration, acidity and tannic structure needed for this style.The 2016 vintage is an important part of its identity. Poggio Antico describes it as a five-star year, shaped by a classic Mediterranean growing season: a cool start, a warm summer with marked day-night temperature differences, and a September that helped bring ripeness and freshness together. The vineyards sit at around 500 metres above sea level on a south-facing plateau with gravel and many stones, south of the village of Montalcino.
The ageing is just as deliberate. After fermentation and maceration, the wine spent 30 months in traditional large casks made from Slavonian and French oak, followed by another 30 months in bottle. That long maturation gives the Riserva its serious, composed character and explains why the wine is described with notable ageing potential.
