Domaine Charlopin Tissier Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2020 is a red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits, made from pinot noir within the AOC Gevrey-Chambertin. It is a village wine, yet its origin is quite specific: the fruit comes from old vines in the Marchais climat, directly below Clos Lavaux Saint-Jacques.The domaine was founded in 2013 by Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier and is based in Morey-Saint-Denis. Its holdings include parcels in Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Vosne-Romanée and Pernand-Vergelesses. In that setting, this Vieilles Vignes cuvée gives a focused view of Gevrey-Chambertin, shaped by old vines and a structured, concentrated style.
The grapes are destemmed, given a cool pre-fermentation maceration and fermented spontaneously. Maturation then takes place slowly on fine lees in 228-litre barriques for 18 months, with around 50% new oak. That ageing helps explain the wine's combination of dark fruit, spice, firm structure and a noticeable but integrated wood influence.

The 2020 benefits from air, so decanting or opening it in advance is worthwhile. It pairs well with lamb, red meat, game, stews, poultry, cheese and grilled vegetables. Domaine Charlopin Tissier comes from Burgundy, one of France's most highly regarded wine regions. This relatively young estate was founded in 2013 and is run by brothers Yann and Justine Charlopin, who come from a family with deep-rooted wine traditions. Although the estate does not yet belong to the absolute greats of Burgundy, it has managed to attract attention in a short period of time with its approach to winemaking: respect for the terroir, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a strong focus on the expression of grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Charlopin Tissier owns vineyards around, among others, Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin, resulting in a range of typical Burgundy wines that vary from fresh, mineral-driven white wines to elegant and refined red wines. The working method is largely traditional, with manual harvesting and careful selection being standard practice. Despite its short history, Domaine Charlopin Tissier has become a name that is followed with curiosity by enthusiasts of modern Burgundy with a classic approach.
