Cantine Sardus Pater Kanai Carignano del Sulcis Riserva 2020 is a dry red wine from the south-west of Sardinia, from the island of Sant'Antioco. It carries the Carignano del Sulcis DOC Riserva designation and is made entirely from Carignano, a grape variety that sits at the centre of this producer's work.The most compelling part of the story is the vineyard origin. Sardus Pater refers to bush-trained alberello vines on sandy soils at sea level, with ungrafted vines averaging around 80 years of age. That gives Kanai a very specific Sardinian identity, tied closely to Sant'Antioco rather than to a broad, anonymous Italian red wine style.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, while the malolactic fermentation is carried out fully in barriques. The wine then matures for 10 months in Allier oak barriques, followed by 6 months in bottle.
