Our buying advice for Tamdhu 21 Years

The Tamdhu 21 Years is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who enjoy a premium single malt whisky. This whisky originates from the Scottish Speyside and was bottled at 47.5%. This powerful and intensely fruity whisky demands a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky because the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single malt whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Flavour notes

The aroma is deep and intricate, opening with candied orange and cherry, macerated raisins and dried figs. Beeswax, tanned leather, saffron and Ceylon cinnamon add a mature, layered aromatic depth.

On the palate it starts remarkably soft and full. Dark chocolate, apricot marmalade, roasted nuts and heather honey are carried by an elegant mineral note. The finish is long and warm, with blonde tobacco, mocha coffee and dried fruit lingering slowly.

Product info about Tamdhu 21 Years

Tamdhu 21 Years is a Speyside single malt built around long, deliberate sherry cask maturation. It has spent twenty-one years exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, giving the whisky its mature depth, generous fruit character and layered spice.

The appeal here lies in the way time and cask influence meet. The long maturation brings weight and refinement, while the sherry casks add darker tones, polished wood influence and a broad, fruit-driven character. At 47.5% ABV, it still carries enough strength to show that depth clearly.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see Tamdhu 21 Years as a serious expression for drinkers who appreciate sherry-matured single malt with age, structure and a composed sense of richness. It completes Tamdhu's age range with maturity and poise, while staying firmly rooted in its Speyside identity.

The aroma is deep and intricate, opening with candied orange and cherry, macerated raisins and dried figs. Beeswax, tanned leather, saffron and Ceylon cinnamon add a mature, layered aromatic depth.

About TAMDHU

Nestled in the Speyside region, the heart of Scottish whisky production, the Tamdhu distillery stands out for its unwavering dedication to sherry. Since its founding in 1897, Tamdhu has built its reputation around a unique principle: every drop of its single malt is matured exclusively in first-class Spanish oak sherry casks. Unlike many other distilleries that use a mix of casks (bourbon, sherry, etc.), Tamdhu fully commits to the richness and complexity of Oloroso sherry casks. This approach gives its whiskies a generous character, with pronounced notes of dried fruit (raisin, apricot), gentle spices, and honey. The distillery, whose name means the little black hill in Scottish Gaelic, still works with its original larchwood washbacks and uses pure water from the Ailie Brae spring. Today, Tamdhu is praised by connoisseurs for expressions such as the "Tamdhu 12 Year Old," a whisky with an intense and fruity profile that perfectly embodies the deep and warm identity of the distillery.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tamdhu 21 Years?

Tamdhu 21 Years is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Tamdhu 21 Years is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Tamdhu 21 Years a single cask whisky?

No, Tamdhu 21 Years is not a single cask whisky.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years a whisky at cask strength?

No, Tamdhu 21 Years is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tamdhu 21 Years is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tamdhu 21 Years might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years een goede keuze voor mij?

This Tamdhu 21 Years can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Tamdhu 21 Years whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years a spicy whisky?

Yes, Tamdhu 21 Years is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Tamdhu 21 Years a fruity whisky?

Yes, Tamdhu 21 Years is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Tamdhu 21 Years pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tamdhu 21 Years whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tamdhu 21 Years have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Tamdhu 21 Years is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years an independent bottling?

No, Tamdhu 21 Years is an official bottling of Tamdhu.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tamdhu 21 Years is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Tamdhu 21 Years a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Tamdhu 21 Years whisky from Tamdhu is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
