Flavour notes

Deep and dark in colour, with a concentrated aromatic profile built around dark fruit: black plum, blackberry, blueberry, cassis and dark cherry. Around that core come violet, cedar, liquorice, graphite, menthol, tobacco, bitter orange peel and earthy accents.

On the palate it is full, concentrated and firmly structured. Ripe dark fruit remains at the centre, framed by noticeable yet refined tannins and a clear line of freshness. The finish is long, with Cabernet Franc bringing tension, spice and aromatic precision. For young bottles, decanting is recommended to let the wine open up.

Product info about Chateau Angelus 2016

Chateau Angelus 2016 is the grand vin of Château Angelus in Saint-Emilion, a dry red Bordeaux blend made from 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. For this vintage, the estate carried the Premier Grand Cru Classé A classification, placing the wine firmly among the most notable names of Saint-Emilion.

The fruit comes from the estate's vineyards on the southern slope and at the foot of the Saint-Emilion hillside, set in a natural amphitheatre close to the town. Merlot is mainly planted on the more clay-rich sections, while Cabernet Franc grows on sandy clay-limestone soils lower down the slope. That helps explain the shape of the wine: depth and density from Merlot, with the Cabernet Franc bringing tension, floral detail, spice and aromatic precision.

The 2016 growing season at Château Angelus was defined by contrast. A wet spring gave way to an exceptionally dry summer, with cool nights helping to preserve aromas and acidity. Rain in mid-September refreshed the vines before harvest took place between 4 and 21 October. Vinification was carried out in stainless steel, concrete and wooden vats, followed by 18 to 22 months of ageing in new barriques and foudres.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Saint-Emilion we would present to someone looking for a serious Bordeaux with concentration, structure and long ageing potential. With only the last bottles available, Chateau Angelus 2016 has become an especially focused choice for admirers of this particular vintage.

About CH ANGELUS

Château Angélus is a winery from Saint-Émilion, in the Bordeaux region of France, best known for its red wines based on merlot and cabernet franc. The estate has a rich history dating back to the 18th century and has been owned by the de Boüard de Laforest family for several generations. Château Angélus belongs to the Premier Grand Cru Classé A category of Saint-Émilion, a designation granted to only a select number of estates based on strict quality criteria. The vineyards are located on the slopes near the town of Saint-Émilion and benefit from a combination of clay and limestone soils, which contribute to the complexity and aging potential of the wines. Production methods are traditional, with careful grape selection and aging in oak barrels. Château Angélus also produces a second wine, Le Carillon d'Angélus, appealing to a wider audience. The wines from this estate are appreciated worldwide and are known for their elegant, concentrated style and impressive aromatic expression, characteristic of top wines from Saint-Émilion.
