Château Les Ormes de Pez 2020 is a red Bordeaux from Saint-Estèphe in the Médoc. It is produced by Château Ormes de Pez, owned by the J.-M. Cazes family, also associated with Château Lynch-Bages. For the 2018 to 2022 vintages, the estate sits in the top Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel category, a fitting context for a wine with such a firmly left-bank identity.One of the defining features of the 2020 vintage is its notably high proportion of Merlot for Saint-Estèphe. The blend brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The Merlot reflects the estate's cooler clay-sandy soils, while the gravel-rich parcels support the Cabernet component and its firmer structure. That gives the wine a combination of ripe fruit depth, freshness and the tannic backbone associated with Saint-Estèphe.
The grapes were hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, followed by traditional vinification. Maturation took place for 16 months in French oak barriques, 45% of them new, adding polish and depth without pushing the fruit into the background. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Bordeaux for drinkers who enjoy the structure of Saint-Estèphe, but with a generous, juicy centre to the wine.
The 2020 is still youthful and has the structure to develop over many more years. It naturally belongs alongside grilled beef, lamb, game, roasted poultry and mature hard cheeses. Only the last bottles remain available.
