Château Cheval Blanc 2020 is the grand vin of the Saint-Émilion estate, a dry red Bordeaux from the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. This vintage still carries the Premier Grand Cru Classé A mention on the label, placing the wine firmly among the most serious releases of the appellation.The 2020 blend is 65% merlot, 30% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. For Cheval Blanc, that is a notably high proportion of merlot, reflecting how well that variety performed in this warm and contrasting year. The estate's vineyard is a patchwork of clay, gravel and sand, and the different plots are treated individually according to soil, vine age and grape variety.
That same parcel-by-parcel thinking continues in the cellar. Selected, destemmed grapes are moved by gravity, fermentations are started with an estate pied de cuve based on indigenous yeasts, and extraction is handled with restraint. The 2020 grand vin spent 16 months in 100% new French oak, yet the available tasting notes point to more than just power: precision, freshness and finely shaped tannins are central to the wine's identity.
