Kanai Carignano del Sulcis Riserva 2018 from Cantine Sardus Pater is a Sardinian red wine with a strong sense of place. It comes from Sant'Antioco, in the south-west of Sardinia, where Carignano is an important part of the local wine identity. This Riserva is made from 100% Carignano, grown at sea level on sandy soils and traditionally trained as alberello vines.One of the most compelling details here is the age of the vineyards. Sardus Pater mentions an average vine age of around 80 years, with vines on their own roots. That connection to the older sandy vineyards of Sulcis gives the wine a background that is very specific to its origin.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, while the malolactic fermentation is carried out entirely in barriques. Kanai then matures for 10 months in Allier oak barriques, followed by a further 6 months in bottle before release.
