Product info about Petrolo Galatrona 2020
Petrolo Galatrona 2020 is a dry red wine from Tuscany with a very precise identity: it comes from the Galatrona vineyard in Val d'Arno di Sopra and is made entirely from Merlot. Petrolo describes it as the Merlot cuvée of that vineyard, with the official designation DOC Val d'Arno di Sopra Merlot Vigna Galatrona. The first vintage was 1994, so this is a wine with a clearly established place in the estate's range.The vineyard setting matters here. Galatrona lies near Mercatale Valdarno/Bucine at around 300 metres altitude, facing south-east. Its soils include loam, clay, galestro schist, alberese marl and sandstone. The clay component is especially relevant in warm, dry Tuscan summers, as it helps retain moisture and supports the ripening of Merlot.
For the 2020 vintage, Petrolo describes a mild winter, a spring with rain and cooler moments, and a summer that allowed the bunches to develop evenly. The grapes were hand-harvested between 7 and 12 September, sorted carefully, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in glazed concrete vats. Ageing took place for around 18 months in selected French oak tonneaux and barriques, about one third of them new.

About PETROLO
Petrolo is a Tuscan winery located in the hills of Val d'Arno di Sopra, an area southeast of Florence. The estate has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages, although it only took on its modern form as a winery in the twentieth century. The vineyards of Petrolo are planted on soils rich in clay and stone, which contributes to the characteristic structure and depth of their wines. Well-known grape varieties used at Petrolo are primarily Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is especially known for its high-quality red wines, such as Galatrona, a 100% Merlot that is regularly well received in international wine reviews. Much attention is paid to sustainable viticulture, and a large part of the work in the vineyard is still carried out by hand.
