Flavour notes

Château Lagrange 2020 shows the profile of a concentrated yet fresh Saint-Julien. The aromatic register is built around black cherry, blackcurrant, cassis and plum, with violet, liquorice, graphite, tobacco, cedar and pencil shavings adding a more savoury, refined layer.

On the palate it is described as medium to full-bodied, with ripe but lively dark fruit, firm fine-grained tannins and clear acidity. The producer points to a creamier mid-palate than in some more classically austere vintages. Chocolate, vanilla and toast sit within the oak influence, while the finish remains long, structured and fresh.

Product info about Chateau Lagrange 2020

Château Lagrange 2020 is the red grand vin of the Saint-Julien estate in the Médoc. As a Troisième Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, it carries serious Bordeaux pedigree, yet the interest here lies very much in the detail of the vintage. Only 38% of the production was selected for the first wine, with a cabernet sauvignon-led blend supported by merlot and a small proportion of petit verdot.

The grapes come from the château's continuous vineyard holding in Saint-Julien, set across two north-south ridges with clay, limestone, pebbles and gravel. The estate describes 2020 as a year of contrasts and its smallest crop in thirty years. Small berries with skins rich in polyphenols gave the wine its firm architecture, while a four-day pause during the cabernet sauvignon harvest allowed tannins and aromas to develop further.

The same sense of precision carried through the cellar work: hand harvesting in small crates, manual selection of whole bunches, optical berry-by-berry sorting and parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Ageing lasted 21 months in oak barrels, half of them new, giving the wine a polished oak presence that the tasting notes describe as integrated rather than dominant.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, Château Lagrange 2020 sits among the Bordeaux wines chosen for structure, longevity and classical Saint-Julien depth. The château indicates a drinking window from 2025 to 2050. If opened young, aeration or decanting is useful, especially given the cabernet-driven tannic frame. With only the last bottles remaining, availability is becoming part of the story of this vintage.

About CH LAGRANGE

Château Lagrange is a well-known wine producer from the Bordeaux region in France, located in the prestigious appellation of Saint-Julien on the left bank of the Gironde. The wine estate has a long history that goes back to the 18th century, with a prominent mention as Troisième Grand Cru Classé since the famous classification of 1855. The estate encompasses over 100 hectares of vineyards, where mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are cultivated. Under the management of various owners throughout the centuries, including the Japanese Suntory since 1983, Château Lagrange has invested in modern vinification techniques and vineyard management, contributing to the consistent quality of their wines. The style of Château Lagrange is known for its balance, elegance, and the potential to age for a long time. In addition to the classic Grand Vin, the house also produces a second wine under the name Les Fiefs de Lagrange. The wines of Château Lagrange are loved by connoisseurs for their refined character and the typical, structured style of Saint-Julien.
