Haut-Batailley Verso 2020 is the second wine of Château Haut-Batailley in Pauillac, a property listed as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. Verso shows the château from a more approachable angle than the grand vin, while still carrying recognisable Pauillac traits: dark fruit, tannic shape, spice and a graphite-like mineral note.The 2020 blend is made from 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon. That merlot share gives the wine a generous fruit core, while the cabernet keeps the Bordeaux structure clearly in place. The fruit comes from Haut-Batailley's vineyards in the southern part of Pauillac, close to Saint-Julien, on soils of Garonne gravel, clay and alios.
The growing season started early, followed by warm spring conditions, a dry summer and a warm, dry September before harvest. Grapes were picked by hand and carefully sorted. Ageing took place in one-year-old oak barriques, so the emphasis stays on fruit, freshness and the wine's Pauillac identity rather than on a heavy new-oak signature.

About CH HAUT-BATAILLEY
Château Haut-Batailley is a winery from the Bordeaux region in France, more specifically from the renowned Pauillac appellation in the Médoc. The estate has a long history in the wine world, dating back to the 18th century. Since the Bordeaux classification of 1855, Château Haut-Batailley has belonged to the Crus Classés as a fifth Grand Cru Classé (Cinquième Cru). For a long time, the estate was managed by the Borie family, until it was taken over in 2017 by the Cazes family, also known from Château Lynch-Bages. The vineyards are located on classic gravel soils, characteristic of Pauillac, and cover more than 20 hectares. The grape varieties are traditional for this region, with an emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot and a small share of Cabernet Franc. Château Haut-Batailley is known for its wines that combine power, elegance and refined complexity, often with a solid structure and potential for long aging. The estate works with respect for tradition, but under recent ownership has also invested in further quality and modernization of viticulture and vinification.
