Product info about Yjar 2018
Yjar 2018 is a red Rioja with a very defined sense of origin. It comes from Rioja Alavesa, from selected parcels within the historic Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri near Labastida de Álava, at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño. The vineyard is high-lying, about 3.8 hectares in size, planted with old gobelet-trained vines and a mixed selection of native Rioja varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Granegro and Rojal.The 2018 vintage is particularly notable because it is only the second vintage of Yjar. Rather than presenting Rioja in broad terms, this wine focuses on one place: limestone-rich soils, altitude, old vines and a traditional field blend. Specialist sources describe a long maturation for this vintage, often stated as 30 months in French barriques, giving the wine shape and depth while keeping the vineyard at the centre of the story.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, Yjar 2018 sits among the bottles that show Rioja in a more detailed, terroir-led way. Production was very small, with fewer than six thousand bottles mentioned in available specialist sources, and the vintage received striking critical recognition, including a 100-point score from James Suckling.
Serve it around 16 to 18 °C and give it time to breathe. Opening the bottle in advance or decanting is recommended by specialist sources to help the aromatic complexity unfold. With its concentration and structure, it has the presence for beef, lamb, veal, poultry or hearty stews.
