Flavour notes

Behind the fruit there are notes of bell pepper, sweet spice, toasted sesame, liquorice, tea, earth, menthol, vanilla, chocolate and black pepper.On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with ripe fruit, good density and a supple, fleshy texture. The tannins are fine-grained, ripe and lightly dusty, balanced by enough freshness to keep the wine lively. The finish is long, carrying dark fruit, savoury tones, dark chocolate, iron-like and saline accents, and lingering spice.

Product info about Vina Almaviva Epu 2020
Vina Almaviva EPU 2020 is the second wine of Almaviva, the Franco-Chilean project founded in 1997 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro. EPU means two, yet this is far more than a simple secondary label: it comes from the same Puente Alto setting in Maipo Valley and clearly reflects a Cabernet Sauvignon-led identity.The 2020 blend is built around Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Carménère, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its fruit comes from younger vines within the Almaviva terroir, in a higher-altitude area at the foot of the Andes, where stony, well-drained alluvial soils help shape colour, ripeness and freshness. The warm, dry 2020 vintage brought an early harvest and a riper, more concentrated expression.
Twelve months in French barriques, with only a modest share of new oak, add structure and depth while keeping the fruit at the centre. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a fine example of Bordeaux-inspired Chilean winemaking with a clear Maipo Valley accent.
The 2020 vintage has also received strong recognition from international wine critics, with scores around 93 to 94 points. As these are our last bottles, it is a particularly worthwhile bottle for anyone wanting to explore EPU alongside the wider Almaviva story.
