Flavour notes

Château Rouget 2020 is built around ripe dark fruit, with black cherry, plum, blackberry and blackcurrant appearing repeatedly in tasting descriptions. Beneath that fruit sit darker notes of chocolate, cocoa and espresso, joined by liquorice, tobacco, leather and truffle.

On the palate it is described as medium-full to full-bodied, concentrated and smooth in texture. The tannins are ripe, soft and velvety, with enough fresh tension to keep the wine from feeling heavy. The finish carries dark fruit, spice, cocoa and fresher elements, sometimes touched by graphite, black olive, sandalwood, autumn leaf or undergrowth.

Product info about Chateau Rouget 2020

Château Rouget 2020 is the grand vin of the estate, from Pomerol on Bordeaux's Right Bank. The blend is led by Merlot, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role, and the fruit comes from Château Rouget's own vineyards on the Pomerol plateau. The estate describes the 2020 vintage as round, fruity and concentrated, with freshness and tension running through the wine.

The growing season helps explain that profile. A very wet winter was followed by an early start to the vines, while the clay-influenced soils helped carry them through the summer heat. Harvest began early, on 15 September, with hand-picking in small crates and several passes through the vineyards to capture parcel-by-parcel ripeness. In the cellar, careful sorting, full destemming, partial barrel fermentation, wooden vat vinification and ageing with 30% new oak all point to a detailed, carefully handled Pomerol rather than a broadly made Bordeaux.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Pomerol we would place in front of someone looking for ripe dark fruit, depth and a soft, velvety tannin structure. The 2020 vintage has been well received by several critics, including high scores from James Suckling, Vinous and Decanter. With the last bottles now in stock, it is especially relevant for those who still want this specific vintage of Château Rouget.

When opened young, it can benefit from one to two hours of decanting. Serving it around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius helps preserve its freshness. It is well suited to classic meat dishes such as beef, lamb, duck, game and roasted poultry, as well as mushrooms or richer pasta dishes.

About CH ROUGET

Château Rouget is a French wine producer from the renowned Bordeaux region and focuses mainly on making red wines originating from the Pomerol appellation. This region is known for its rich, elegant wines, usually dominated by the Merlot grape variety, often complemented with a part of Cabernet Franc. Château Rouget has existed since the nineteenth century and owns vineyards that are favorably located on the rolling clay and gravel soils of Pomerol. The estate belongs to the Labruyère family, who are also active in other French wine regions. The production is relatively small-scale, which fits the region's tradition, with much attention paid to quality and terroir. Thanks to this approach, the wines from Château Rouget are generally full-flavored, with soft tannins and pronounced fruity and spicy notes. The brand consistently delivers wines that remain true to the character of Pomerol and is loved by enthusiasts of classic Bordeaux wines.
